One of the semi common faults the Grand Cherokee gives, once it has done a fair few kilometers, is a noise caused by a worn out bush in the front suspension.
The bush that is always the first to fail is the front lower control arm bush. It is always the front most bush and this can give a clucking noise over bumps and when apply the brakes lightly. This noise is most often heard when parking the vehicle or manuvering at slow speeds such as inside a shopping centre car park.
The replacement bush is not available seperate from the arm if you are buying genuine Jeep parts. You will need to purchase the complete arm and they are very expensive. The good news here is that Genuine arms are not necessary and you can get away with this repair by using aftermarket arms or in some cases you can even get just the bush and replace the bush itself using the press.
It is important to note, before you condemn this arm or bush, a common oversight in the diagnostic process is a fault with the sway bar links. Before you replace this arm. Just remove the front sway bar link pins from the vehicle and do a lap around the block. If you noise is gone replace your sway bar link pins, save yourself several hundred dollars and your welcome. If not, continue with the lower arms.
Also of note. if left un attended for too long, this can cause excessive load on the front upper control arm and the same thing will happen to that.
This is a complete arm replacement job. When you’re doing that one, you will struggle to find the 18 MM nut for these two bolts that hold this arm in. They are both in the engine bay which makes this job a right pain to do. the rear most nut is down between the strut tower and the firewall.
