One of the more common faults with the early model petrol engines in various Jeep models is an issue relating to the valve seats.
Most commonly this fault occurs after the vehicle has over heated however this is not always the case.
The seat for the valve dislodges from inside the cylinder head. This prevents the valve from reacting to its correct position in the head. Upon the next rotation of the piston the valve and the piston make contact. This often bends the valve however it actually send the impact back through the rocker arm and into the hydraulic lifter. this happens with such force that the lifter blows a huge chunk out of the cylinder head. When this fault occurs nearly always the cylinder head is damaged beyond repair.
The big challenge with this issues is the sourcing of new or even second hand cylinder heads. Majority of wreaking yards are reluctant to seperate the heads from the engine block so you are forced to replace the complete engine.
There are Ebay alternatives for cylinder heads however they come bare. This means additional parts are required such as valves, rockers and lifters. After buying an eBay head you will have to pay an engine builder to put the head together.
