A common fault with the Multi van and Transporters with a manual transmission is a noise from what is initially believed to be the clutch release bearing. Whist this diagnosis is spot on in most cases In the case of the VW the noise often comes from the failed Duel mass Flywheel.
A trap for first timers is to replace the clutch kit an leave the flywheel alone. After completing the job the noisy clutch bearing is still present. The fault is caused by the two plates of the duel mass flywheel becoming damaged and starting too seperate.
The only fix for this noise is to replace the flywheel. Unfortunately this is a rather expensive exercise as it’s a duel mass. Single mass options are available however they are not advised.
The long and the short of this story is when the clutch release bearing is noisy or when the clutch wears out in one of these VW vans. Replace the complete clutch kit with the flywheel. You won’t get much change from $3000 but you won’t have to do the job twice.
